Forbidden Love
My dear readers,
to thee I implore
you must imagine
70's India; to explore
depths of this tale of those times,
narrated to me on reportedly true lines.
Actors of this story-
Deepa and Ravi.
She was gorgeous and elegant
draped in silk saree;
tied in chignon were her tresses
walked the stunning beauty
as the world confesses.
Tall and dark with soulful eyes
he was simple; as a man could've been,
singing lovelorn songs
while playing his mandolin.
Both attended the same college,
he was her senior as per my knowledge.
One day while sitting under a cherry tree
he played melancholy love songs aplenty,
one of them struck a chord in her heart,
well! that's how my friends, this tale had its start.
One glance it took
for them to know,
they were meant to be together
so they went with the flow-
Storm of feelings brewing in their
hearts, sparks flew in the air,
they felt ever so connected
in that electric atmosphere.
Finally, to express such complicated emotion
they were compelled to resort to the age-old tradition
of exchanging love borne letters, I know not through who,
addressing each other as Dharmendra and Saira Banu.
Days wore on, by now everyone knew
the couple was together and deeper their love grew.
But attention! my readers, the time was not true,
Alas! comes a plot twist,
as their love couldn't endure even a year or two,
they were to fight against the society's view.
Taken from each other they were thrown apart,
both their families had played their part.
Unable to go against her loved ones
she was forced to marry a wealthy man-
respecting her decision, he stayed mum
shrouded in grief concurred with her plan.
She tried her best to start afresh
a marriage to save, a new bond to mend.
But, each time her trials fell short
until slowly her reality started to distort.
Meanwhile, afar he was left alone,
hurt and broken, vanished into oblivion
and within him a terrible disease had grown.
Erelong, on his door
was knocking death,
he wrote her a letter
before drawing his last breath;
Said he,"O' my sweet angel,
I shall wait for you in that place,
where no one cared for cast and race,
all that'd matter is love and grace!"
Now that's how my fellows,
this story came to an end.
I hope they met and their souls transcend-
to a realm which was more
just and even,
for no matter how much
the world is at odds-
Some bonds are truly forged in heaven.
